| Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members | 3 August 2007 |
Somalia has lacked any internationally recognized central governmentsince the fall of the Siad Barre regime in 1991. The currentTransitional Federal Government is the fifteenth attempt to create aformal state. The country is currently controlled by various politicaland regional factions as well as local warlords in the south and in two"republics" in the north. The former British colony ofSomaliland---consisting of five districts in the northwest---declaredindependence in 1991, and the northeastern region---known asPuntland---declared autonomy in 1998. |
